In , the State enabled the creation of redevelopment agencies in every city and town in Rhode Island. Pursuant to this authority, the Providence Redevelopment Agency was established in The focus of the Redevelopment Agency is the elimination and prevention of blighted and substandard areas. The Redevelopment Agency is also granted broad power to foster economic development in substandard and blighted areas. Historically, Redevelopment Agencies across the country have used their broad powers to acquire properties and clear large tracts of land for redevelopment, based on their purpose of the elimination of blight.
Today, conditions have greatly changed. Fewer dollars are available for large-scale projects. Therefore, the Agency is taking a more nuanced approach to redevelopment which fosters neighborhood revitalization and private investment. Through the Redevelopment Agency and the Providence City Plan Commission, and with the approval of the Providence City Council, areas of the City which contain blighted and substandard conditions are established as Redevelopment Areas.
Redevelopment Plans are then created to establish project areas within the larger Redevelopment Area. This process is designed to create a coordinated strategy that proposes specific improvements to an area. The membership of the Providence Redevelopment Agency consists of the Mayor of the City of Providence, ex officio, and seven members. Five of the members are required to be resident electors of the City and are appointed by the Mayor, and two are required to be members of the City Council, appointed by the City Council.

Providence is the capital and most populous city of the state of Rhode Island and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. He named the area in honor of “God’s merciful Providence” which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River at the head of Narragansett Bay. Providence was one of the first cities in the country to industrialize and became noted for its textile manufacturing and subsequent machine tool, jewelry, and silverware industries.
Providence was settled in June by Roger Williams and grew into one of the original Thirteen Colonies. Williams was compelled to leave Massachusetts Bay Colony due to his differing religious views, and he and others established Providence Plantations. This settlement merged with others to become the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , and it was a refuge for persecuted religious dissenters from the beginning.
Providence Plantations was burned to the ground in March by the Narragansetts during King Philip’s War , despite the good relations between Williams and the sachems with whom the United Colonies of New England were waging war. Later in the year, the Rhode Island legislature formally rebuked the other colonies for provoking the war. Providence residents were among the first Patriots to spill blood in the lead-up to the American Revolutionary War during the Gaspee Affair of , and Rhode Island was the first of the Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown on May 4, Following the war, Providence was the country’s ninth-largest city [b] with 7, people.

Halfway through , R. Coalition Against Domestic Violence reflects on state of domestic abuse and emergency needs in Rhode Island. To date, we have lost five Rhode Islanders to domestic violence homicides this year, the most recent victim being Derek Desjardin, who was 30 years old when he was killed by his roommate in June. Each of these victims deserved so much more. We honor their lives, and recognize victims and survivors are not statistics.
Each of these fellow Rhode Islanders were loved ones and members of our community, and they are not defined by abuse. The lives of their loved ones are forever changed, and our communities have been impacted by this devastating loss of life — lives stolen by domestic abuse. Domestic violence affects us all, and sends harmful ripple effects throughout our state.
